Argh........Decisions Decisions

Ok first things first I really need to find someplace to learn czech as my "loving" english teacher wife will not teach me,

More importantly I like most of you like it here in Brno & am quite happy,
but how many of you have a czech partner that hates it here?

its driving me up the wall she spends more time in the UK than I do, & is obsessed with getting her MA then PHd (none of which will get her a job)
so far this has cost me more than 4 new audi TT's

She just presented me with yet another Uni fee & This time I am thinking of packing it in, the only problem is I like it here.

So with nil friends here anymore(she's good @ that), I could really do with some advice!

I just had a great experience in Salon Meridian in Brno.
They do facials and massages and speak English and German !!!

Other Great Brno Sites

There are a number of sites about Brno that are worthwhile checking out in my opinion. These are;

Brnopolis is mostly in Czech but it has an English language section and often covers interviews with ExPats in Brno. Occasionally, they also hold events in Brno. Nice site and well worth checking out.

Brno Now is a local blog that is the original source of news from Brno for everyone who prefers English to Czech. It is written by a local freelance journalist and contains good quality articles.

The Czech Daily Word is another news in English focused blog written by a journalist if you want a bit of a broader view.

Driving in Brno...

Driving in Brno is something that I don't have to do too much of given the fact I live close by the city center and the public transportation system is fantastic. I'm glad I don't have to drive too much though. It seems that almost every street out of town has long-term roadworks going on and traffic gets snarled up surprisingly quickly for a place the size of this city.

I guess that its all EU money being spent on improvements but I'd like to throttle the City planning department who appear to have taken the view that we might as well do everything at once.

What do you think?

ExPats Get Together in May

We will have our usual get together on Thursday 28th MAY for a beer or three at Atrium from 7:30pm onwards. (Josefská 514/5, 602 00 Brno-město (1. patro)). Come join us and meet a few new friends.

In past months we have had as many as 35 people at these get togethers and most seem to have a good time. Its a great way to meet new friends!

The Modern Apartment Building

These days it seems new apartment blacks are springing up like spring daisies all across the center of Brno. I suppose it is good that this is happening as it brings and/or keeps people inside the city center but I am beginning to wonder if these new apartment blocks won't simply turn out to be tomorrow's slums. It seems to me they must all be designed by the same architect as they are all concrete with featureless facades and even featureless square rooms. In short, they are boring.

It would be nice to see more thought being put into apartment design. Little touches of innovation and interest as opposed to simple square boxes. I suppose it is cheaper to build square boxes but I wonder how livable these are?

Scanning property, as I am apt to do, I notice that renovations are often architecturally more pleasing possibly because they have to make best use of space and differentiate them from the new apartment blocks.

Does anyone agree?
