I had a walk along Pekarska street yesterday it was the first time I had been there for ages due to the long term reconstruction work which made it a virtual no go zone for a long time.

It really is an interesting street and the relaxed atmosphere makes a pleasant change from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

There are loads of small independent shops there including one selling "Fair trade" goods, there is also a shop selling a wide range of model cars, buses etc. Another shop sells sailing supplies believe it or not.

Among the many pubs a couple that caught my eye were "Skanzeen" a Slovak themed pub with many specialities from the land of halusky and "Baker Street 24" a cosy and newish pub which is non-smoking. I also saw another place which offered Czech classic food to eat in or take away. The Shanghai chinese restaurant and the upmarket Brabander are also located on Pekarska.

The street also offers one of the ubiquitous (sp?)nail salons which have sprung up all over Brno recently and at the other end of the scale the Brno branch of the exclusive Sabai Thai Massage Centers.

Not exactly on Pekarska but just opposite on Silingrovo Namesti is Brno's new hotel the Cosma Brno Palace well worth having a peek through the main entrance.

Plus loads of other bits and pieces which you can easily spend a couple of hours exploring, only two minutes walk from the Zelny Trh

Themed or Original?

Tyvole is that place you're talking about the sermirsky klub (swordsman's club) it's pretty good but I couldn't work out if it was a Disney style re creation or whether just nobody had bothered to clean or decorate it since the 17thc Laughing out loud

BTW Many years ago I had the worst Chinese meal I've ever had at the Sh*ngh*i on Pekarska I think the kitchen was 100% Czech hopefully it's since then improved.

Yeah, that's the place right next to the stairs. There is also another pub/restaurant down those stairs on the right corner. I believe it's called U Annenska, but we call it safe crackers. Its a real classic Czech pub and they have cheap Starobrno and food. It's full of drunken senior citizens, workers and ex-cons. My friend's dad says the place hasn't changed a bit since the 70's, including the waitress, however there is no English speaking menu or staff, so if you don't speak Czech I wouldn't recommend it.

Pekarska

Yep - we live just off the street and so I walk it everyday to the office. It is an interesting street and I can tell you that "Skanzeen" is and excellent restaurant having eaten there many times. Additionally, the massage place is also very good but pricey. I have had a massage there and also bought one for my partner as they offer vouchers that you can give people... great birthday/xmas Party or name day gift imo....

If you take the first left heading toward Mendlova Namesti on the decline there is a really good medieval themed restaurant. Excellent food, nice portions and sometimes fencing clubs in historical costumes hang out there. That Brabander is one of my favorite restaurants in Brno as well.
