Hi Folks,

My wife and I are considering an offer of employment in Brno and are concerned it might be a bit too provincial and dull for us. We have no kids and we're usually more at home in big cities. And we don't speak a word of Czech.

Just how boring is Brno?

Do you have to drive to Prague for decent shopping and dining?

How is driving that road to Prague - scary? Or fine?

...looking forward to your advice!

Thanks,
John

I know an American guy who moved her years ago with his fiancee and he and I ended up at a student party. We were talking to a rather attractive Masaryk University student and when he told her that he had moved here with his partner she replied, "Don't bring wood to the forest." Wink

We work and have a daughter so we havent got that much time but once in a while we do get bored never the less. I mean, no offense to the locals or anyone but Brno IS provincial. Then again, you get used to provincial pretty fast if you put your mind to it. There are good things about it too. One thing your wife might find hard to come to terms with might be the horrible clothing culture (expect mostly eurothrash) and the lack of hygiene (people stink). But in return her hairdressers, cosmeticians and manicure bills will be rediculous (i have my hair dyed and cut for appr. 20 euros and never had it better). Shopping is ok, though you might once in a while go out to Vienna or Budapest if looking for sth special. If you like to workout and or do outdoor sports Brno is perfect and you wont stick out. There are very nice beaches, a few multiplexes (lots of movies play in english), and in general all entertainment is relatively cheap. Food is cheap too and so are drinks.

About the drive... do 2-2,5 hours on a proper european highway scare you?

Eurotrash clothing

I don't know about that for girls clothes, you will run into alot of metrosexuals, but I think you'd find that anywhere now. The girls here dress sexy, because many of them have nice bodies and like to show them off. Nothing wrong with that imo

No, i have no problem with sexy either. As long as you can sport it its all good. What i mean is low qual vietnamese or other crappy clothing in ugly, harsh colours, non-fitting sets, LOTS of biiig muffin tops hanging out, bad dye-jobs, generally a lot of bad choices made by girls here.
Very little elegance or class, a lot more show-off and a lot of fake stuff too. As for lovely bodies, in general i think the population is quite overweight here, though i admit you get to see a relatively big percentage of hot girls too Smile

There are quite alot of guys and girls with mullets, but then again I noticed that in the former East Germany as well.

Its very boring. You wouldn't like it here.

Food is sold in communist style shops, and they often run out of sugar and butter. There are no discos, and its cold all year round.

I suggest you go to Ibiza or somewhere instead.

All relative!

I think it's all relative and depends what you are used to. Brno certainly isn't London, Paris, LA or even Prague. However the vast majority of expats I come across here are happy or very happy with their current lifestyle.

There are out of town shopping malls(don't expect the range of goods found in the UK or US though), a new golf course, multiplexes and much else. You certainly won't go hungry there are pubs and restaurants on every corner... fine dining, thinner on the ground.

Generally the opinion seems to be "big enough but not too big" and Vienna, Budapest and Prague are all withing striking distance for a weekend trip. Plus many places worth visiting in the CR itself.

Use the search engine on this site to check out anything you're particularly interested in or even better (if you're in the UK)jump on Ryanair from Stansted and take a look for yourself...
