Teaching Jobs
By the look of the Classified Ads section it looks like the teacher recruitment season is starting to get underway.
How do the language schools in Brno recruit EFL and other language teachers these days?
Which websites do they use? Or do they just rely on people sending in CVs or rolling up asking for work?
If you have been offered a job for the new school year or are already here and working how were you recruited?
It's a bit of the crisis, but more typical for new teachers on the Brno scene. Technically the semester hasn't started yet, should be in about a week or two. What the schools here do is try to sign up as many student/company lessons as possible in the beginning of September, then when they have all the lessons finalized it's a mad rush to hire teachers. Not professional at all, but that's how most of them operate.
Like Bridboy said, they will normally offer new teachers the lessons no one else wants, so you may have to travel longer to companies than other teachers at first. I have a full time job, but still teach a bit for extra money and I have to turn down lessons all the time from people who got my number from a former colleague or one of their drinking buddies etc. so after a semester or so it gets much better.
I teach in several different locations, for a couple of schools for major (blue chip) clients here in Brno, and have a few private individuals at home ... and I have more work than I can poke a stick at.
I have no problem finding jobs and am constantly turning them away. I believe if you are good at what you do, you can very quickly build a reputation here. It is simply NOT the case that they send you the work no-one else will do.
The usual surprise for ex-Praguites is the drop in hourly rate ... but this is not Prague, and the cost of living is lower.
I love the variety in my life, and the cross-section of the community I am learning about.
In this age, there is no such thing as long-term. It is an outmoded concept ... anyone who stays in one position for too long just attracts mould. I say get out there and enjoy this place - teach everyone and anyone, and see how enriched your life becomes!
That's interesting Wisconsinite, thanks! I think the first year teaching in a new location, unless you're very lucky, can be tough.
I remember when my wife and I moved to Prague from Brno a few years back an old timer called Norm told me "take any reasonable work that's offered to you at the start during the first school year, schools, agencies, companies, private students, etc. after the first year you should have made enough contacts with clients (and impressed them enough
) to pick and choose and deal direct with them after that.
It certainly worked for me after travelling around Prague for a year a lesson here and a lesson there I was able to come to an agreement (admitedly to the initial displeasure of the original agency) with one particular client and happily worked for them through my ZL for the next seven years.
I'm not sure that many language schools do actively recruit. At least, I haven't seen many signs of this.
I just moved here with 2 years teaching experience elsewhere in Czech Rep and blindly sent my CV to 13 different language schools. I heard back from 5 who were interested. I interviewed with 3 so far, and while they all report to be very happy to 'cooperate' with me, no one has full time employment. All suggest I should cooperate with multiple schools via my zivno and patch together enough lessons to survive on. Not sure if this is the crisis talking, or the typical story for a teacher entering the Brno scene. Was better up in Parbubice...
Hello Wisconsinite,
I seams to me that you have quite a lot of experience with teacher community here in Brno. Please help me to find some suitable English teacher for my husband. He prefers private lessons in morning hours.
Thanks for your help.
There are vacancies for Brno based native speaker teachers of English for both children and adults in the Classified Ads. Take a look!

Brno Time

I tried to put this up as a Classified, but it won't accept my name or password ... so I hope all hopeful candidates see this post:
SEEKING OUTSTANDING NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKING TEACHER
I am looking for a ZL-holding, Degree+TESOL qualified, loving and caring native English speaker to take over my abundance of classes in and around Brno.
Preferably you will have a solid business background to supply you with the necessary context my students require.
Lessons are full or half days in one place, and you can expect to earn around 40,000Kc+ per month depending on your hours. If you fill my schedule, you'll make that much anyway.
Interested? PM me asap ... I must unfortunately go back to Oz due to unforeseen family problems in a month, and need to know my long-term, consistent and fantastic friendly students are in good hands. You'll be subcontracting to two school with solid contracts and reliable payment routines.
Please help me go home with peace of mind!!!
